RICE FALL BALL 2008
Rice vs. McNeese State 11/1 Exh Game Recap
By Roger Tower
There was no suspense today as to the team that
was going to win. The only suspense was how long the Owls could hold the
Cowboys scoreless. The answer was 9.2 innings. Rice pitching struck out
sixteen for the second straight week. There were four walks and a hit
batter. McNeese had eleven hits (one double and ten singles).
Rice scored 1 in the first, 1 in the second, 2 in
the third, 2 in the fourth, 2 in the fifth, 1 in the seventh, 5 in the
ninth, 5 more in the tenth, and 2 in the eleventh. I ran out of fingers and
toes.
Ojala pitched three innings of shut out ball. He
struck out five, walked one and allowed one hit. Great stuff.
Taylor Wall pitched a perfect fourth. He gave up
three straight singles in the fifth On the second single he got a great
throw from Mozingo to nail the runner trying to go to third. Taylor then
picked the runner off first off. The third single came with no one on
base. A strike out closed the inning.
Jordan Rogers gave up a single and a walk with two
out. His only strike out ended the sixth. Harwood pitched a perfect
seventh.
Evers pitched the eight and ninth. A lead-off
walk, a fielders choice and a nice double play turned in by Brock Holy
fielding the ground ball stepping on second and firing to first ended the
eight. A two out single was all that happened in the ninth. Two strike
outs by Evers.
Benak was greeted by two singles in the tenth. A
bunt moved the runners along. A sac fly to left scored their first run of
the game. A grounder to third ended the inning with a tag of the runner
moving to third.
Doug Simmons struck out the side in the eleventh.
Fazio pitched the twelfth. The lead-off man
reached third on a ball that the Owls couldn't come up with at least twice.
A pop foul to third kept the runner at third. A ground out to the rightside
plated the second McNeese run. Haynes pitched the thirteenth. A
single to center; a hit batter got him in trouble. Two strike outs followed
but he then walked the bases loaded. A pop to short ended the inning.
Jay Rogers pitched the fourteenth. A two out
single was all the only runner.
Trying to keep track of the batting order got a
little tough. Jimmy Comerota was batting in the two hole to start the game.
He wound up in the lead-off spot at some point. This didn't keep Jimmy form
getting a season's worth of hits for the afternoon including a HR. I had
him going 7 for 8, 3 runs, 5 RBI.
Other offensive players: Holt was 3 for 5. Three
infield hits. Two runs.
Mozingo was 1 for 6 with a double and a walk.
Rendon crushed the ball in each of his first two
at bats but the balls went just foul. The first down the third base line
into the corner and the second over the fence but foul. He was still 3 for
6 with 3 runs, an RBI, and a walk.
Seastrunk was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
Manuel was 0 for 2 with a run scored. Hale was 1 for 2 with a run.
Sultzbaugh hit some shots to right-center. He
wound up going 3 for 6 with a double, 3 runs, and an RBI.
Peterson was 2 for 7, 2 runs, 3 RBI.
Rathjen was 3 for 5 with 1 run, 2 RBI.
Fuda was 2 for 5 with 2 runs, 4 RBI, HR.
Crain was 0 for 3 with a walk and a run.
G-Luna was 1 for 5 with an RBI.
Buenger had a single.
DeBiasse a walk and a hit by pitch. One run
scored.
Simmons walked in his only AB.
